How to use Displacement maps in Unreal Engine

  1. Start Greyscalegorilla Studio, browse for any material with displacement that you’d like to use, and click the download button on the thumbnail. Once the download is finished or if it has already been downloaded; you can click the 'Send Asset' button.

  1. You will see the imported material and its instance in the Unreal Content Browser. It will be listed under Greyscalegorilla > Materials folder. Each material has an Instance which provides a flexible and efficient way to create variations of base material without duplicating the entire material. You can have numerous customized instances.

Details Tab: Some materials expose parameters to let you tweak the material, you can see these on the Material Instances. (i.e. Tiling, Offset, Rotation etc.)

  1. Drag the 'Material Instance' to your model to assign it. (We're using a plane to keep things simple.)

  1. Click on the 'Selection Mode' and switch it over to 'Modeling Mode'

  1. Click on 'Deform' and then select 'Displace' option under the 'Modeling mode'.

  1. Select 'Texture2D Map' from Options > Displacement Type

  1. Drag the displacement texture into the 'Displacement Map' field. Adjust the 'Displace Intensity' and 'Subdivisions' values based on your model and the desired look.

  1. After you finish tweaking, click the 'Accept' button.
